DIY Residential Wind Turbine: How to Build One

A residential wind turbine is a very effective way to generate power. You don’t need any outer devices for wind generation. Simply the proper flow of wind will do the work smoothly. If you are a homeowner, you will obviously look for ways to save your money in any kind of situation. Wind turbine will be your savior in this case.

Not only it will help you to generate power at your home, but you will also get free electricity along with that. Sounds lucrative, right? Good news is that you can build the turbine easily if you know the proper techniques and have the right tools for your project.

The project might seem tough initially, but if you gather proper knowledge about the techniques and you are smart enough, building the turbine will appear like other easy projects that you might have done in the past or have heard from some DIY workers.

However, this article will give you the beneficial information that you will need to build the turbine. The information will be provided in a simpler way so that it will be easy for you to grasp.

Then, without further ado, let’s get started.

How to Build Wind Turbine Easily

Follow the mentioned process so that you can build the turbine easily without any hesitation. As a beginner, you should work from generating minimum power and gradually level your way up.

What Kind of Tools You Will Need?

Arrange all the tools in one place so that you can form a mental map about the kind of tools that you will need during your specific work. Make a checklist about the tools if possible. Start with PVC tube, round metal piece, and screws. Then you will need a drill machine. These are the basic tools to get your job done.

Without these, your project will seem impossible. In the case of the generator, use a motor. Along with that, arrange some plastic sheet, rectangular metal, a large piece of wood for the base and pipe bracket. Then finish it off with arranging wires for the electrical connection and a battery.

Building Process: Wind Turbine

You can easily make the blades by cutting the PVC tubing according to the shape of the blade. The tubing should be wide enough to tolerate any kind of wind speed. The blades can be made in different sizes so you have to make sure you cut the blade and form it in a shape that will be in proportion with the total size of the wind turbine.

For residential purpose, 16 to 20 inches of blade length will do the work. After you have cut the PVC tube and formed 4 blades of equal length, simply attach it to a hub. Hub can be made with the round metal piece. The drilling in the hub should be done carefully so that it can fit perfectly with the motor.

Take the blades and screw it gently onto the hub. Make sure the screwed blades are tight enough so that it doesn’t loosen up while it rotates.

Accordingly, take the motor and attach it patiently to timber wood. The length of the wood should be around 36 inches. For safety purpose, cover the motor with the plastic sheet. This will protect the motor to be unaffected from any kind of harm due to the fluctuation of the weather condition.

Connect the rectangular metal onto the other end of the wood to act as a tail fin. These will help in directing the blades to the direction where the winds are the strongest and will help in getting more power overall. Behind the motor, drill carefully and insert wires. Pick the pipe bracket and attach it beneath the hole.

Then insert an even smaller pipe onto the bracket. Make sure the smaller pipe can move easily and freely so that the blades can spin straightforwardly due to the wind. Take the wire and insert it into the pipe.

After that, take the whole system that you have built and attach it to a piece of wood that is large enough to work perfectly as a base. This base should be fixed to the ground or any other kind of weighted system for getting a perfect support.

This should be done because the base and the whole windmill system need to stand strong and vertical when the strong winds will hit. Run the wire carefully from the motor of the wind turbine to a dry place where you have placed the battery. Connect the wire carefully between the motor and the battery.

Likewise, the connection is done due to the storage of electricity that will be generated from the conversion of wind energy. You can also use an extra battery for this purpose. If your current battery is full, you can just replace it with a new fresh one. In this way, the electricity generation will be in a constant flow.

Benefits Provided by the Wind Turbine

  • Your electricity bill will decrease by more than 50%. You will be awed when you will check the bill.
  • It only uses wind for its purpose. No other external devices or sources are necessary for it to run. Hence, it only works with natural wind energy.
  • You can install it anywhere according to your preference, whether it is in the garden, rooftop, etc.
  • You can even add solar power motors to the generator for its power generation. In this case, wind energy and solar energy will do all the work.
  • The process is ‘greener’ for the environment as it doesn’t release any toxic gases (carbon monoxide etc.) to the atmosphere. In that sense, wind turbine proves to be environmentally friendly.
  • The working process of the turbine requires no water. So consumption of water is not happening in this purpose and as a result, tons of water are being saved around the world due to the use of this system.

Conclusion

Hope this guide gave you all the information that you were looking for. Enjoy working with the project and reap the rewards that come from the wind turbine.

Have a nice day!
